Member Types
Create and manage member type definitions for your organization.
Member type management is available to National Admins. Member types are accessed through the Membership tab in National Organization Settings.
Overview
Member types define the categories of members within your organization, such as Member, Officer, Advisor, or Alumni. Each member type can have its own set of custom fields, membership fees, and active/inactive status. Member types also affect conference registration rates, since participant rates can be configured per member type.
Viewing Member Types
- Navigate to Settings > Administration > Organization in the sidebar.
- Click on your national organization, then click the Membership card.
- The Member Types tab is selected by default.
- Each member type is shown as an expandable card displaying:
- The member type name
- An Inactive badge if the type is not currently active
- A count of custom fields defined for this type
Click the expand arrow on a member type card to view its details, including membership fees and custom fields.
Creating a Member Type
- Click Add New Member Type at the top of the member types list.
- A form modal appears with the following fields:
- Name — the display name of the member type (e.g., "Active Member", "Chapter Advisor")
- Description — an optional description of this member type
- Active — toggle whether this member type is currently available for assignment
- Membership Fees — set the national fee and default association fee for this member type
- Custom Fields — define fields specific to this member type (similar to chapter fields: name, key, type, required, etc.)
- Click Save to create the member type.
Editing a Member Type
- Click the Edit (pencil) icon on the member type card.
- The form modal opens pre-filled with the current values.
- Modify any fields as needed.
- Click Save to apply changes.
Deleting a Member Type
Deleting a member type requires confirmation. You must type the member type name to confirm. Members currently assigned this type will need to be reassigned, and custom fields associated with the type will be lost.
- Click the Delete (trash) icon on the member type card.
- A confirmation dialog appears explaining the consequences:
- Members using this type will need to be reassigned
- Custom fields associated with this type will be lost
- Type the member type name to confirm.
- Click Delete Member Type to permanently remove it.
Membership Fees
Each member type can have associated fees that are used when generating membership invoices:
- National Fee — the fee charged at the national organization level
- Default Association Fee — the default fee charged at the association level (associations may override this)
These fees appear in the expanded view of each member type card and are used by the billing system when generating per-chapter membership invoices.
Custom Fields
Member types can define custom fields that appear on the member profile form when a member is assigned that type. Custom fields support the same types as chapter fields: Text, Textarea, Number, Date, Email, Phone, URL, and Dropdown.
How Member Types Affect Registration
When configuring conference registration rates, participant rates can be set differently for each member type. For example, advisors might have a different registration fee than active members.
